Why You Need To Add Barre Into Your Workout Routine

You don’t have to be a prima ballerina to do a barre class! Barre is a combination of Pilates, functional strength training, and a little bit of ballet to spicy up your workout at any level.

In an article published by the online magazine Brydie in 2021, Julie Erickson of Endurance Pilates and Yoga explained barre like this, “A barre workout combines traditional elements of a classical ballet barre workout with Pilates and contemporary leg exercises to offer a low-impact, challenging workout focusing on the lower body,” explains Erickson. “A barre workout will tone the glutes, hamstrings, and calves, creating that long, lean dancer look.”

Barre is a very low impact workout, making it great for people recovering from injuries or for beginners who want to jump into their fitness journey. Barre is great to add into your workout rotation because it tones those muscles that you have worked so hard for, as well as; improve your posture, increase your flexibility, and reduce your stress levels.

I started teaching Barre classes a little less than a year ago and I have seen a huge improvement in my posture and tone of my muscles. Since Covid has happened, a lot of my students have been joining class via Zoom and doing their workouts from home. In all reality you don’t need a ballet bar to do these exercises from home, all you need it the back of a couch or just a kitchen chair! My students range in age from 16 year olds, to 75 year olds! Barre is truly for anyone.

So where do you start?

There are so many amazing instructors and trainers out there, I encourage you to support local studios like mine. But, sometimes you just need an at-home option. YouTube has so many amazing teachers creating barre videos every single day. I’ll link a few of my favorites for you to try. Keep in mind that everyone has a different teaching style so if you didn’t like one instructor you might like a different one.

What are you waiting for?! Grab a chair and let’s sweat!
